REVERSE OSMOSIS (RO) SYSTEM

Reverse Osmosis (RO), also known as hyper filtration, is a process to remove dissolved inorganic solids like salts from water. The most common type of water that needs RO is seawater and brackish water. The solids are removed by pushing them with high pressure through a semi-permeable membrane. 

RO technology was developed in the 1960's for recycling of waste water on spacecraft. Over the proceeding years, reverse osmosis has become a leading technology for producing high quality pure water, free from dissolved impurities.

RO Systems work by using a pump to push inlet water across a semi-permeable membrane. By applying back pressure to the system, the water molecules are forced through the membrane leaving almost all the dissolved salts on the concentrate side of the membrane.

During the process, the highly concentrated stream of waste water is sent to the drain. The action of this waste water flowing over the membrane ensure that impurities are washed from it's surface and prevents scaling.

Some systems allow for a proportion of the concentrate waste water to be recycled with the new feed water. In many applications, recycling can be used to produce a higher ration of pure to waste water
